J. Craig Venter (1946-10-14 to 2026-04-29) was an American geneticist, entrepreneur, and genomics pioneer who helped lead the private effort that produced the first draft human genome and later created the first synthetic bacterial cell. He founded or co-founded major institutions and companies including TIGR, Celera Genomics, the J. Craig Venter Institute, Synthetic Genomics, and Human Longevity. In his later years he continued building genomics ventures, including Diploid Genomics, while remaining a prominent voice in longevity, synthetic biology, and precision medicine.
