Jean-Martin Charcot

Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) was a French neurologist and professor of anatomical pathology whose work at Salpetriere Hospital helped define modern clinical neurology. He is widely described as a founder of modern neurology, with major contributions to the study of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, hypnosis, and hysteria. His teaching and mentorship influenced later figures including Sigmund Freud, Joseph Babinski, Pierre Janet, and Georges Gilles de la Tourette.
