Beth Levine, M.D. (1960-2020), was an American physician-scientist best known for pioneering research on autophagy and for identifying the mammalian autophagy gene BECN1/Beclin 1. She served as professor of internal medicine and microbiology and director of the Center for Autophagy Research at UT Southwestern, was an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and was a scientific founder of Casma Therapeutics. Her work linked autophagy to cancer, infectious disease, aging, metabolism, and neurodegeneration.
