Emerging Technologies and Aging Research: Bioprinting, Organ Regeneration, and Beyond | AFAR Webinar (March 20, 2025) Innovations in organ and tissue regeneration are rapidly advancing and hold great promise for supporting healthy aging. New therapies can now grow ectopic organs within the body, while 3D‑printing technologies are creating complex, functional tissues from living cells. In this webinar, moderated by AFAR Board Member Sergey Young of the BOLD Longevity Growth Fund, experts Eduardo N. Chini, MD, PhD (Mayo Clinic); Michael Hufford, PhD (LyGenesis); Michael Levin, PhD (Morphoceuticals and Tufts University); and AFAR President Thomas A. Rando, MD, PhD (UCLA) explored how these emerging technologies could transform organ transplantation, drug testing, and regenerative medicine. They also highlighted how new partnerships between academia and biotech may accelerate personalized medicine for all. Learn more about aging research: https://www.afar.org/ Follow AFAR on social med
LyGenesis CEO Michael Hufford joins Prime Movers Lab Partner Gavin Mathis to discuss Michael's extensive background in drug development and the innovative work being done at LyGenesis in regenerative medicine. The company has found a way to turn lymph nodes into bioreactors to grow functioning ectopic organs, particularly the liver. Michael shares insights into their clinical trials, the economic implications of their therapies, and the broader applications of their technology. He also addresses the regulatory landscape and personal reflections on the challenges and future of regenerative medicine.
LyGenesis announced that an initial volunteer has received an injection of donor cells to turn one of their lymph nodes into a second liver. The procedure was carried out in Houston on March 25 as part of a clinical trial that will test the experimental treatment in 12 adults with end-stage liver disease. These patients usually require a liver transplant, but donor organs are in short supply. LyGenesis is hoping to spur the growth of enough healthy liver tissue that patients don’t need a transplant. “We’re using the lymph node as a living bioreactor,” says Michael Hufford, cofounder and CEO of Pittsburgh-based LyGenesis. He says just 10 to 30 percent in additional liver mass could have meaningful effects for patients with end-stage liver disease. About 10,000 people in the United States are on the transplant list for a liver, and many will wait months or years to get one. That number doesn’t include those who need a new liver but don’t qualify for a transplant because of other health

2020 was a year of massive disruption for ageing science. On one hand, COVID-19 offered a new paradigm in which to study and explain the benefits of ageing science to investors, healthcare providers and regulators. On the other, two high profile trials didn’t deliver the results that were needed to propel the field into the mainstream. This session looks at what was learned and how to move forward. • Michael Hufford, Co-Founder and CEO, Lygenesis • Maddalena Adorno, Co-Founder and CEO, Dorian Therapeutics • Moderator: Natalia Novac, Senior Director Emerging Technology & Innovation, Lilly New Ventures, Eli Lilly The #Longevity Leaders channel features sessions from the Longevity Leaders Congress, where our mission is to advance innovations that will extend human #healthspan and enable financial, physical and mental #wellness in later life. The University of Pittsburgh's Innovation Institute has turned up the volume to connect its innovators to programs, services and funding they need to assess the commercial potential of their innovation or big idea and accelerate on the path to market. Today on Business as Usual, we're talking to Evan Facher Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Entrepreneurship - University of Pittsburgh, and Michael Hufford, CEO and Co-Founder - LyGenesis. Find out how the Innovation Institute helped launch LyGenesis to build an organ regeneration technology platform enabling a patient's lymph nodes to be used as bioreactors to regrow functioning ectopic organs. It's an amazing story of how our universities are fueling growth and innovation in the Pittsburgh region.
Overview of LyGenesis' technology for organ regeneration.
Innovation 18 at 2017 Innovation Showcase Inventors: Eric Lagasse, PharmD, PhD An estimated 6 million people of the US population are affected by advanced liver diseases. Annually, these diseases result in 100,000 new end-stage liver disease (ESLD) patients, and 40,000 deaths. ESLD patients’ only existing option for survival is liver transplantation, but less than 10% will receive a new liver. LyGenesis enables a patient’s own lymph nodes to be used as bioreactors for liver regeneration. This is a rapid, capital-efficient investment with a final pre-IND large animal study and a completed phase 2a clinical trial with topline data 2.5 years post-funding.
