Robert D. Schreiber, PhD, is the 2024 Innovators in Science Award Senior Scientist winner, recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to cancer immunology. Dr. Schreiber is the Andrew M. & Jane M. Bursky distinguished professor of pathology and immunology and director of The Bursky Center for Human Immunology and Immunotherapy at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Schreiber discovered the groundbreaking concept of “cancer immunoediting.” This process reveals how our immune system is not just a defender against viruses, but also a sculptor of cancer cells, shaping them in a way that can either lead to their elimination or their escape from detection. Martin surprised roommates and best friends Zach Eisner and Max Klapow with exciting news – both had been awarded the Truman Scholarship, one of the most prestigious and selective scholarships in higher education. Eisner is a junior studying biomedical engineering at McKelvey School of Engineering and co-founder of LFR International, a nonprofit that offer first aid training in nations without advanced emergency medicine.
