Subscribe 🌎 Demis Hassabis is the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs. He believes AI will help cure every disease on Earth within a decade. The day after he closed the Google I/O keynote, his team invited me to Mountain View to interview him about the Future of AI at Google Deepmind. We get into Gemini for Science, his AlphaFold work he was awarded the Nobel Prize for, and how Google DeepMind aims to cure every disease within the next decade. Demis also discusses his answers on the AGI timeline, AI’s potential in curing cancer and Alzheimer's, and why he believes the future of AI is directly tied to scientific discovery. Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis just raised $2.1B to build the future of medicine. Zero patients. Two weeks ago — May 12, 2026 — Sir Demis Hassabis closed a Series B at $2.1 billion for Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug-discovery company he spun out of Google DeepMind in 2021. Hassabis is the same Nobel laureate who, in October 2024, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold — the AI system that solved the 50-year grand-challenge problem of protein folding in 2020. The $2.1B round is the largest private AI-biotech raise in history, second only to Uber among recent US tech IPOs. What hasn't happened yet: Isomorphic has not given its drug to a single human being. So why did anyone hand a Nobel laureate $2.1 billion to make drugs that don't exist yet? Because this has happened before. In April 1976, two men met for a 3-hour beer at Churchill's bar in San Francisco. One was a UCSF biochemist named Herbert Boyer. The other was a 28-year-old who'd just been fired from his job at Kleiner &
Isomorphic Labs has just raised $2.1 billion in new funding. Demis Hassabis announced it today, framing the round as a turbocharge for the company's stated mission - to one day solve all disease. Isomorphic is the DeepMind spinout built on AlphaFold, the Nobel-winning protein structure model. The new round, led by Thrive Capital with Alphabet alongside, dwarfs the $600 million Isomorphic raised in 2025. The cash buys time. Hassabis has pushed the company's first human trials from late 2025 to the end of 2026, with oncology candidates leading the pipeline. Existing partnerships with Novartis and Eli Lilly could pay close to $3 billion in milestones, but only if the drugs work in patients. The next eighteen months will tell us whether AlphaFold's lab-bench wins translate to the clinic. It's the biggest single bet yet on AI-designed medicine. If it lands, the rest of pharma is in trouble. --- Daily AI Roundup - the AI news that actually matters, every weekday, plus the Top
Demis Hassabis, the mind behind DeepMind and AlphaFold, just pulled in $2.1 billion for Isomorphic Labs. But the real story isn't the check size. It's WHO wrote it. Thrive Capital led the round. Alphabet and GV doubled down. And for the first time, two sovereign wealth funds from different continents: MGX (Abu Dhabi) and Temasek (Singapore), backed the same AI pharma play simultaneously. That's not just investor confidence. That's a signal about where AI is actually going. Isomorphic Labs is building IsoDDE, an AI platform that doesn't search existing drug databases. It designs novel molecules from scratch. Small molecules. Antibodies. RNA therapeutics. The thesis: collapse the drug discovery timeline from decades to months. Design faster. Fail cheaper. In this breakdown: why Hassabis' track record makes this different from every other AI pharma pitch, why sovereign wealth is moving NOW, and what this deal signals for every industry waiting on AI to cross from code to chemist
Demis Hassabis won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024. Not for a drug. Not for a treatment. For an AI that learned the shape of every protein in the human body. [Pause.] Most people said: incredible scientific achievement. Hassabis said: that is step one. [Beat.] Here is the problem he is trying to solve. Developing a single drug today takes 10 years. It costs billions of dollars. And it fails 90% of the time before it ever reaches a patient. Of every 10 drugs that enter clinical trials — 10 years of work, billions of dollars, thousands of scientific careers — only one makes it through. [Hold.] His company, Isomorphic Labs, is building a system that runs that entire process on a computer. Identify the target. Design the compound. Predict how it behaves. Minimize the side effects. End to end. Before a single experiment is run. The first human clinical trial of a fully AI-designed drug is expected before the end of this year. [Pause.] His long-term vision is this: you describe a diseas
Demis Hassabis is the Co-Founder & CEO of Google DeepMind - working on AGI, responsible for AI breakthroughs such as AlphaGo, the first program to beat the world champion at the game of Go; and AlphaFold, which cracked the 50-year grand challenge of protein structure prediction and was recognised with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Demis is revolutionising drug discovery at Isomorphic Labs. Demis Hassabis is a Nobel Prize winner and CEO of Google DeepMind. He is one of the most important people alive on what is quickly becoming the biggest technological advance of our lifetime. Because the biggest way AI is going to impact your life, you can’t see. It’s not a chatbot or an image generator. It’s the tools he and his team are building that are invisible to you – in new drug design, nuclear fusion, natural disasters detection, quantum computers. So who Demis is and what he chooses to build matters a lot. And he’s fascinating… He’s a childhood chess prodigy who at 17 turned down a reportedly million dollar job offer from a gaming company to go to college instead, and then get a PhD in neuroscience. He founded his company DeepMind with a mission to “solve intelligence” – starting with beating video games. He sold that company to
At India AI Summit 2026, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs, shared insights on the evolution of Artificial Intelligence. He reflected on the 2013 deep reinforcement learning breakthrough that mastered Atari games and discussed today’s advancements like Gemini Robotics. Hassabis highlighted the debate between general AI systems and specialized tools like AlphaFold, while predicting major breakthroughs in robotics within 2–3 years. He also emphasized AI’s transformative potential for India’s youth and the Global South through open-source innovation.
