What does it take to bring a cure closer? The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) introduces a new quarterly speaker series, Closer to Cures, featuring presentations from our dedicated grantees that showcase their journey from research to potential FDA approval. This program brings updates directly from the forefront of medical innovation, with a special emphasis on therapies currently in clinical trials. Featured speaker Cory R. Nicholas, PhD, of Neurona Therapeutics, shares some of the latest news on the cell therapy they are developing to treat epilepsy.
This is a multicenter, single arm, open label clinical trial that is designed to test the safety and preliminary efficacy of single administration inhibitory nerve cells called interneurons (NRTX-1001), into both temporal lobes of subjects with drug-resistant bilateral mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
This clinical trial is designed to test whether a single image-guided intracerebral administration of inhibitory nerve cells, called interneurons (NRTX-1001), into subjects with drug-resistant unilateral mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), with or without mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS), is safe (frequency of adverse events) and effective (seizure frequency). NRTX-1001 comprises human interneurons that secrete a neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
Dr. Cory Nicholas, Ph.D. is Chief Scientific Officer at Neurona Therapeutics, whose mission is, in part, an extension of Dr. Basbaum’s work funded by the FPRF. It continues to develop a human inhibitory interneuron therapeutic for the treatment of neuropathic pain syndromes. Prior to co-founding Neurona, he was a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, where his research program was focused on investigating the ontogeny of human cortical interneurons. Corey pioneered methods to derive interneuron precursors from human pluripotent stem cells for transplantation into multiple animal models of neurological disease. Neurona and the FPRF share a bold vision to achieve pain-free disease modification. Corey is also a Co-Lead Investigator with Dr. John Neubert on the FPRF research project “Evaluation of a Cellular Therapeutic for the Treatment of Trigeminal Pain.” This project is designed to test whether the Neurona interneuron cell therapy
