Celine Halioua built Loyal to give dogs more healthy years with the people who love them. Watch the full Outlier Briefing on our channel now.
Can you extend a dog's lifespan? Loyal founder and CEO Celine Halioua is running the first ever FDA-concurred lifespan extension clinical trial to find out. In this episode of Outlier Briefings, Bain Capital Ventures partner Kevin Zhang sits down with Celine to talk about building Loyal from the ground up, navigating a regulatory path that had never existed before and what the Stay Study, a 1,300-dog clinical trial across 70 veterinary clinics in the US, could mean for the future of aging, for dogs and humans alike. Watch and learn more about dog longevity science and why dogs are the best model for human aging, how Celine is building the first FDA regulatory path for a lifespan extension drug, the Stay Study (the largest canine lifespan clinical trial ever conducted) and what it takes to go from contrarian to consensus as a biotech founder. 0:00 Introduction 0:25 What is Loyal? 1:03 Why dogs are the best model for human aging 2:13 Going from "laughed at" to running a clinical trial 2
What if the biggest barrier to a longer life isn't science, but the economic incentives of corporations? In this episode of Onward, Ben sits down with Celine Halioua, founder and CEO of Loyal — the biotech company on track to earn the first-ever FDA approval for a drug whose only purpose is to extend lifespan. The catch: they're starting with dogs. Celine walks Ben through why the U.S. healthcare system is structurally incapable of building preventative medicine, why each dog-owner relationship is a "micro single-payer health care system," and how a quiet 2019 change to FDA regulation was the one-to-one cause of Loyal existing at all. ("If this pathway didn't exist, Loyal wouldn't exist. October 2019, I incorporated.") From there, the conversation widens. Celine lays out the Tesla-style master plan — save the dogs, save the world — that uses dog-drug revenue to fund human longevity work, escaping the discipline of biotech VC entirely. The question isn't if the first longevity drug gets approved – in almost every universe, it's when. That changes how investors think about the opportunity. Do you come in now and get the discount for bearing approval risk? Or wait until post-approval when the company can be more competitive on price, but so can everyone else trying to get into the deal?
When Loyal founder Celine Halioua told people she was building a dog longevity startup, they laughed in her face. Now she's running what could be the largest-ever clinical trial to extend canine lifespans — pursuing FDA approval for multiple drugs to help senior and large dogs live two years longer or more. Celine shares her unusual journey to raising $250 million for a startup that defies easy labels, her Upstart Moment taking her biggest fear head-on, and the example she hopes to set for another generation of women deep tech founders. Celine Halioua is the Founder & CEO of Loyal - the first company to ever receive FDA approval to develop a drug to extend lifespan in dogs, and they have raised $125mm from Bain Capital Ventures, Khosla Ventures, First Round and others to do so. By building a blockbuster longevity drug for dugs, Loyal aims to lay the foundation for safe and effective longevity drugs in humans. In this interview, Celine describes her thesis that longevity drugs should be boring, what it means to create a new market, how charlatans put the whole longevity field at risk, and much more. Celine Halioua is trying to do something no one’s ever pulled off: make dogs live longer and then use those skills to teach us how to extend human life too. Her company, Loyal, is close to bringing the first FDA-approved longevity drug to market, aimed at giving senior dogs one more healthy year. In this episode, we talk about the science, the clinical trials with 1,300 dogs, and why Celine believes the key to human aging might start at the vet’s office. We also get into the weirder corners of biotech culture — Silicon Valley’s longevity obsession, peptides, dog pills that smell like ramen, and why she thinks biotech needs more chaos and fewer “Boston graybeards.” It’s an honest, funny, and wildly sharp conversation about science, ambition, and the future of aging. From a child prodigy in a genetics lab to building a company that can pause life itself, Laura Deming has made a career out of chasing time. At just eight years old she became obsessed with aging. At eleven, she joined Cynthia Kenyon’s pioneering longevity lab. At seventeen, she launched The Longevity Fund—one of the first venture firms dedicated to extending human healthspan. Now, she’s tackling her boldest challenge yet: building a “pause button” for biology. As the co-founder of Until, Laura is developing reversible cryopreservation: the ability to cool living tissue to ultra-low temperatures, hold it there, and then bring it back fully functional. By achieving vitrification (the process of turning tissue into glass instead of ice), Until aims to make organ preservation, and eventually medical hibernation, a reality. *We cover:* • Why longevity was once stigmatized, and what changed to make it one of the most credible fields in biotech today • Why Until’s approach focuses on preser

In this episode, Celine shares how her scientific curiosity about aging and her love for animals converged into a singular mission. She takes us behind the scenes on the founding story of Loyal—from a chance conversation around a campfire, to navigating the capital-intensive world of biotech, to winning over regulators and pet parents alike. I brought two top Silicon Valley entrepreneurs working on extending lifespans on the Newcomer podcast this week. One of them is trying to help people live longer. The other, their dogs. James Peyer, the CEO of Cambrian, is buying up majority stakes in drugs that could combat a particular illness while showing promise for broader use among healthy humans. Meanwhile, Celine Halioua, the CEO of Loyal, is developing drugs to make dogs live longer. Fundamentally life extension, or longevity, is about finding drugs and treatments that can be given to healthy humans to help them live longer, healthier lives. Instead of just treating illnesses, entrepreneurs in the space want to find ways to stave off aging in already healthy people. The space has long been a fascination of mine. In February 2022, I profiled Elad Gil’s investments in an array of companies looking to make healthy humans live longer, healthier lives. The HBO show Silicon Valley helped popularize the idea that Silicon Va

Celine is the founder of biotech company, Loyal, which has raised over $38M in VC funding for its mission to develop drugs specifically designed to extend the healthspan and lifespan of dogs (and hopefully, one day, humans!). She was previously Chief of Staff to Laura Demming at the Longevity Fund. Tune into her riveting conversation with Rahul Rana and Jared Tumiel (who joins us half way through the episode), as they discuss the science of ageing, the role of biotech, and how Loyal is taking a novel approach. Jared is a multidisciplinary medical doctor from South Africa, a fellow of OnDeck Longevity Biotech and the host of "Bit of Tangent", a rationalist podcast exploring ideas in Science, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, and Medicine. Celine Halioua, who studied neuroscience at the University of Texas, Austin, and economics of gene therapeutics at Oxford, founded San Francisco– based biotech Cellular Longevity (known as Loyal) in 2019 to identify compounds that help prevent undue aging and cancer in dogs, which could also potentially help humans. One key advantage: It’s easier to get experimental drugs approved for the veterinary market than for humans. Her first anti-aging drug entering clinical trials next year targets a cellular mechanism hypothesized to mitigate mental and physical decline associated with age. The pre-revenue company has raised over $38 million in venture capital. “There’s never been a drug approved for aging for any species, dog or human,” Halioua says. “My core goal in life is to get the first drug approved.” We published the first edition of the Forbes 30 Under 30 a decade ago, with one clear goal: to identify the new guard, the young innovators, trailblazers and disruptors remaking our worl

In this podcast with Niko Woischnik, founder of TOA, they discuss how to get ahead in the Silicon Valley biotech world (with a very detailed tech framework on her website - link below), why she’s focussing on dogs for age prevention, and the strengths you need to become a founder. She also discusses her difficulties in her career up to here including difficulty dropping out of Oxford University, how balancing work and life is near to
